Fredonia's Magnificent American FlagAddress:
South Mound
Email Address: fredoniakschamber@centurylink.net About this Exploration: Barbara Vaughn, a Fredonia businesswoman, had a dream. She dreamed of a huge flag flying from Fredonia's South Mound that could be seen for miles around.
The Mound is one of two geological anomalies, rising approximately 1005 feet above sea level in the fertile Fall River valley. The sandstone mounds were formed some 175 million years ago when Kansas was a great ocean. The mounds became landmarks to early day settlers, and "Twin Mounds" was one name proposed for Fredonia.
Barbara proposed the idea to the Fredonia Economic Development Committee, and the flag project became a reality.
The 100 foot flag pole was made possible by donations of money, material, labor and engineering from Lafarge North America, Systech Environmental Corp., A-Lert Corp., all of Fredonia, and Tindle Construction in Neodesha.
The Fredonia Lions Club maintains a park/playground and observation platform for the enjoyment of those visiting the top of the mound.
