GET WATHENAWathena is named for a well-known and beloved Chief of the Kickapoo Indians who settled on this land in 1852. The name means "sun shining over mooses horns".
Chief Wathena was a peacemaker and when settlers came to the area he felt it was God's will that they live in peace together.
Peter Cadue, an interpreter of the Kickapoo Indians, was the first settler in Wathena. Today you can visit "Peter's Creek" named in honor of Cadue, the creek runs across the mainstreet downtown Wathena!
