Wamego Explorations | History

A History of Wamego

Wamego was founded in 1866 as a support community for the Kansas Pacific Railroad, which began building its mainline westward in 1863.

Columbian Theatre, Museum, and Art Center

The Columbian Theatre was built in the late 1890s by businessman J.C. Rogers to house artifacts he retrieved from the 1893 World's Fair: Columbian Exposition at Chicago.

Ditto-Leach House

Constructed in 1890, the Ditto-Leach House was built to resemble a Villa in the suburbs of Messina, on the island of Sicily. With its stained glass windows, 21 gables and 70+ windows, this is an attraction for all to see.

Dutch Mill

The Old Dutch Mill was built in 1879 by a Dutch immigrant east of town; it was moved stone by stone to its present location in 1924.
