About this Exploration:

Plainville Library sculptureOutside the Plainville Memorial Library is a life-size sculpture of a six year old girl reading a book.   The sculpture is in memory of Karen Nuckols, a Plainville girl that died in a traffic accident at the age of six in 1986.

The sculpture was completed by Dennis Burghart, a rural resident of Plainville at the time.  By making a porcelain clay model, Burgardt was able to craft the life-size sculpture using native limestone.

While you are at the library, take the time to stop inside and view the modern facility.   The library in Plainville dates back to 1901 when women of the W.C.T.U. started a movement to establish a library in Plainville.   At first housed in the First National Bank, a Carnegie library was built in 1911.   In 1983, the present library was built, on the same site, with community fund raisers and the proceeds from the sale of a quarter section of land donated by Jim and Mary Donavan.

Library hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-noon, 1-4 p.m.   Visit their blog at http://plainvillepl.blogspot.com/.
