About this Exploration:

Amidst the peaceful Flint Hills of Kansas and the storybook downtown of Marion stands the Historic Elgin Hotel, the region’s finest fully-renovated boutique hotel. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Elgin's 19th century limestone building provides a unique venue to rest, relax and reconnect in an atmosphere that blends the nostalgia of the past with the luxuries of today. Five living rooms, an outdoor verandah, a fitness center and a game lounge compliment twelve unique suites to create an exceptional getaway. Private ensuite bathrooms, jacuzzis, and Smart TVs as well as complimentary Wifi, in-room refrigerators, docking stations, and plush robes and slippers make a stay at the Elgin an unforgettable experience for its guests. The elegant Victorian ballroom, conference room and courtyard are available for weddings, celebrations, meetings and gatherings.

The Elgin is located in downtown Marion and minutes from Marion Lake and  Marion Reservoir, only 9 miles from the St. John Nepomucene Cathedral honoring Father Kapaun, and only 30 miles from the National Tallgrass Prairie Preserve. Opportunities to hike, bike, hunt, boat, fish, and shop for antiques abound!

Marion County Kansas: Past and Present has this to say about the historic hotel:

The most elegant of Marion hotels was the Elgin which was built for $25,000 in 1886.  Its three stories were built of magnesium limestone cut by stone cutters Simon Weidenbener and Fred Frobenius.  The Elgin celebrated its grand opening September 15, 1886 with a banquet and ball.

For many years the Elgin was often the site of school and club banquets, Kiwanis noon luncheons, family reunions and other formal or informal gatherings.  Travelers coming in on the Rock Island or Santa Fe stayed overnight; salesmen used it as their headquarters while peddling their wares in the county.

The Elgin closed in the late 1960s.  Neglect and deterioration made it an eyesore.  It was saved in the 1970s and turned into modern apartments.  An extensive renovation was completed in 2009 transforming it into The Historic Elgin Hotel B & B. In 2016, the hotel was purchased by new owners, Jeremy & Tammy Ensey, and the entire facility was opened up for commercial use.
