Lecompton - The Political Birthplace of the Civil War-Where Slavery Began To Die

Welcome to Lecompton, Kansas!  Founded in 1854 it was one of the earliest settlements in Douglas County and the official capital of Kansas Territory during the turbulent years between 1854-1861.  Located on the south bluff of the Kansas River Valley, between Topeka, the eventual state capital, and Lawrence, the abolitionist headquarters during Bleeding Kansas,  Lecompton was at the center of territorial and national politics during the 1850's.

A number of territorial structures remain including Constitution Hall, site of the writing of the Lecompton Constitution and Territorial Capital Museum, located in the former Lane University which was built on the unfinished foundation of what was to be the State Capital.

Constitution Hall was a finalist for the 8 Wonders of Kansas History!

Lecompton is a scenic community with wide tree-lined streets, parks and historic homes and buildings.

Come visit, enjoy the scenery, friendly people, museums, and learn about Territorial Kansas History.
