Bridges of Northern Barton County

Address: North of Hoisington
Kansas, KS 67544

About this Exploration:

There are currently eight historic Works Projects Administration native limestone bridges in Northern Barton County. The eighth has only been recently discovered and will soon be added to the National Register of Historic Places.  The other seven are already listed.

All of the bridges are located along rural township gravel roads just north and east of Hoisington in Barton County.

The stone arch bridges were generally built close to a quarry, usually found within a half mile of the structure location. Evidence of abandoned quarries are within a short distance of each bridge.

Example of one of these bridges is Beaver Creek Native Stone Bridge located on a rural county road, this single-arch limestone bridge spans the headwaters of Beaver Creek. The limestone was locally quarried and features a rusticated finish and retains its tool markings. The decorative keystone notes the bridge's 1941 construction date. The bridge was listed in the National Historic Register on April 14, 2008 for its association with the Works Project Administration.

Location: NE 50 Ave. South and NE 230 Road - 1/4 mile south on NE 50 Avenue.
